Maybe your young ones are scared to sleep alone. Perhaps you have twins who prefer to do everything together. Or it could be you lack space and don’t have a choice.
Whatever the reason, splitting one bedroom between two children isn’t easy. But you can curb territorial squabbles—and your stress level as a referee—with the right planning, especially when it comes to furnishings.
Parental homework required
Costco member Tanisha Lyons-Porter, the Los Angeles–based owner of Natural Born Organizers, believes the greatest challenge involved with a sibling cohabitation situation is maximizing spatial efficiency. This is where detailed prep and careful selection of furniture can make a huge difference.
"One of the biggest mistakes parents make is assuming a set of furniture will fit in a space," notes Porter. "You need to first take precise measurements of the bedroom and utilize graph paper or space-planning apps to lay out a room design plan. You want to divide the space up as equally as possible to be fair to both kids. And you should think about the type of activities you want to happen in the bedroom as well as what your children need."
